An international networking NGO

(Non-Governmental Organization) to promote

international voluntary service in Asia/ Pacific.

It was started in 1997 by 11 NGOs in 11 nations

and now consists of 12 NGOs in 11 nations.



Aims and Goals

By developing international Voluntary service

in Asia/Pacific, we would like to:

a) Improve local/global situations of nature

environment, culture, poverty & human rights.

b) Support local NGOs, and self sufficiency and

human development of local community.

c) Promote friendship, understanding and

solidarity among world youth and local people.



< Brief History >

Mar.95: Informally created at the 1st TNW (Training & Networking Work camp) in Russia.

Sep. - Oct. 97: Actually started at the 2nd TNW

in China with strong cooperation of CCIVS,

UNECO and Mitsubishi Bank Foundation.

Jan.00: The 3rd TNW in Vietnam.

Oct. - Nov. 01: The 4th TNW in Japan

Jan. - Feb. 04: The 5th TNW in Nepal

· Activities & actions have been increasing.

< Activities >

A) TNW (Training & Networking Workcamp)

This is held every two years together with General Assembly of NVDA. About 20 leaders of NGOs from 10-12 countries participate. It aims;

a) “New” NGOs can start international work camps in their countries afterwards, b) Experienced NGOs (NVDA members) can develop their projects and management and c) Many common actions in Asia/ Pacific in various areas can be created.



* What are international workcamps?

International voluntary projects where youth volunteers from all over the world work and live together (usually for 2-3 weeks) with local people.

· Projects are based on local needs like planting trees, playing with kids, running festivals, etc.

· It started in France in 1920 and 2,700 projects in 94 countries were organized in 2004 by NGOs most of that are affiliated in CCIVS UNESCO.



B) Starting Work camps in New Countries

1) China was started by TNW. ACYF hosted in 97.

2) Cambodia was started by KYDO in 98.

3) Thailand was started by Greenway in 99.

4) Indonesia was started by IIWC in 99.

5) Vietnam was started by TNW. VYF hosted in 00.

6) Mongolia was started by MCE in 00.

7) Fiji was started by FIVE in 02.

8) Philippine was started by YES in 03.

9) Malaysia was started by YSM in 04.

C) Common Actions of NVDA

C1: Greening Asia -for forest protection-

a) Over 40 International/ 30 weekend workcamps

are organized every year to protect forests with

over 500 international and 5,000 local volunteers.



b) Over 1,500 Green Foster Parents in Japan to

have grown the seeds of native trees for 2 years.



c) Greening Asia Fund by donations and fund raising

have been collected and supported the forest

workcamps in Mongolia and Fiji since 2002.



d) Drawing contests are organized in Indonesia for

4 times and once in Japan with over 400 kids.



C2: Bracelet Project -against kids prostitution-

a) Over 2,000 Bracelets were made in 01-04 by hundreds of volunteers and local people in

schools and workcamps in 5 countries (Japan,

Indonesia, Thailand, Mongolia and Fiji).



b) The bracelets have been sold in the festivals,

seminars, fair trade shops, etc. mainly in Japan.



c) The sales are used to support NGO projects to

reduce children prostitution in Asia. Cambodian

NGO has been supported since 2003.

C3: International Love Story Books-

International Love Story Books entitled “I can run” part 1 and 2 have been published by IIWC and distributed to the whole members.

The second version of compilation stories will be launched soon on December.



C4: Pen Friend Network-

This action was once supposed to be bilateral action between IIWC and MCE but somehow changed into IIWC and NICE. Now, it is hoped that the action can include the volunteers from all members. The main aim is to tighten friendship among volunteers.



C5: Sister NGOs-

It is to promote the links and cooperation among similar types of NGOs through the volunteers and member NGOs that have much potential resources/ networks in various fields. For example,

a) Kids of orphanages in Mongolia, Japan and Indonesia have corresponded letters, made picture books together, introducing each country since 2002.

b) Kids of elementary schools in Bangladesh and Japan have made the handmade gifts for each other and introduce each cultures since 2003.

We could do it also for farms, festivals, etc.



Other actions proposed for 2004-2005

a) Solid Waste Management with local people

b) Establishment of NVDA Model Organic Farm

c) Promoting Organic Farm Stay Programs

d) Organizing “No Water Day” in workcamps, etc.

e) Creating Water Fund to support water projects

f) Promotion to use acryl sponges to wash dishes

g) Skill development projects for street children



< Joining workcamps! >

If you live in countries/ areas where there are no workcamp organizations (i.e., Taiwan, Singapore, New Zealand, Brunei), you can apply for workcamps

all over the world through NVDA secretariat!

The example of the projects are;

* Construction of a school class room in Kenya

* Teaching English in an evening school of Thailand

* Protecting sea turtles in the beach of Mexico

* Helping homeless people in USA

* Playing with refugee kids in Germany (below)
